The Battle Creek Watershed Conservancy’s Background
The Battle Creek Watershed Conservancy’s mission is to preserve the environmental and economic resources of the Battle Creek watershed through responsible stewardship, liaison, cooperation, and education. It was founded in 1997 by watershed residents as a member-based nonprofit. Members can be individuals, families or businesses that own property or have a financial interest in the watershed and pay an annual member fee.
The Conservancy purpose is:
- The continued conservation of habitat and the aesthetic and recreational resources of the Battle Creek watershed
- The preservation of the economic resources of the Battle Creek watershed including; water rights, ranching, agriculture, hydropower, forestry, fishing and recreation.
- These two goal are to be pursued in a balanced way, without one overriding the other.
The Conservancy’s Concerns are:
- PG&E’s planned decommissioning
- Coleman National Fish Hatchery’s facilities, operation and water supply
- Completion of Phase II of the Restoration Project
- Removal of the “Lower Barrier”
- Fire mitigation and forest & vegetation management
- Restoration of salmon for present and future generations
- Water quality and environment conditions
- Private stewardship
- Preservation of the rural landscape
- Recreational opportunities
- Economic viability of watershed residents and businesses
